FAQs

Questions about custom
software development.

How do I know if I need custom software vs an off-the-shelf solution?

If you're using spreadsheets, whiteboards, or manual processes to fill gaps in your existing software, you likely need something custom. If you're paying for 5 different tools that still don't cover what you need, custom is almost always cheaper long-term. Our free audit will tell you exactly which path makes sense for your situation.

How long does custom software take to build?

Most custom software projects are delivered within 4–8 weeks depending on complexity. Simple admin panels and internal tools can be live in 3 weeks. Complex multi-user platforms with external integrations typically take 6–10 weeks.

Who owns the software once it's built?

You do, completely. For our one-time build model, you receive full ownership of the code and can host it however you choose. For our managed platform model, we handle hosting and ongoing improvements on a monthly retainer.

Can you build something that integrates with my existing tools?

Yes. We build integrations with MYOB, Xero, Stripe, Tyro, Square, Shopify, HubSpot, and most other platforms with an API. If we can't find an official API, we can often build a custom connector.

How it works

How a build actually runs.

Simple admin panels and internal tools are live in about three weeks. Most custom software lands in four to eight. Complex multi-user platforms with outside integrations run six to ten. You get the timeline before we start.

Week 1. How you actually work

We watch the process as it runs now, including the spreadsheet nobody admits to and the whiteboard in the corner. Software built from an org chart instead of the real process is software nobody uses.

Week 2. Design and scope

Screens, roles, permissions, and what each person sees. You sign off on this before anything gets built, and the price is fixed from that point.

Weeks 3 to 6. Build

Built in the order that lets you use part of it early. You see progress rather than waiting for a reveal at the end.

Handover

Your team gets trained on it, you get the code and the accounts, and support is optional and cancellable.

What it costs

Real numbers, before you ask for a quote.

Custom software starts from $9,000 for an internal admin panel or staff portal and runs to $25,000+ for a multi-user platform with roles, reporting and outside integrations. There is a managed monthly model if you would rather not pay up front.

Custom against buying something

If you are paying for five tools that still do not cover it, or filling the gaps with spreadsheets, custom is usually cheaper across three years. If one product covers most of it, buy the product. We will say which on the call.

What moves the number

How many kinds of user there are, and how many systems it has to talk to. The screens themselves are rarely the expensive part.

Who owns it

You do, completely. Full ownership of the code, hosted wherever you choose, and handed to another developer whenever you want.

The other half

Internal software does not bring work in the door.

This page is about running the work you already have. If the problem is that there is not enough of it, start with SEO or web design instead. On the call we will tell you which one is actually costing you money, even if it is not the one you rang about.

Have a system in your head that does not exist yet?

Thirty minutes. Tell us what you need and we will tell you whether it is worth building, what it would take, and what it would cost. If something off the shelf does the job, we will say so.
