Why Your Website Isn't Ranking on Google (And How to Fix It Fast)

Your site is live, it looks good, and Google acts like it does not exist. Ranking failures almost always trace to one of eight causes, and they have a correct checking order. Start at the top and stop at the first one that fails.

A site that fails to rank feels random and rarely is. Around 75% of clicks land on the first five results, so anything past page one earns close to nothing, and the causes that keep you there sort into a checkable list.[1] Run these eight in order. The first one that fails is your problem, and jumping ahead wastes effort on causes you have not confirmed.

SECTION 01Cause 1: Google has not indexed you

Search site:yourwebsite.com.au on Google. Results appearing means you are indexed; skip ahead. Nothing appearing means Google cannot see you at all, and the usual culprits are a "discourage search engines" setting left on from development, a robots.txt blocking crawlers, or no sitemap. Open Google Search Console (free), submit your sitemap, request indexing on key pages, and check the Pages report for named blockers. Every other fix waits behind this one.

SECTION 02Cause 2: no Google Business Profile

Local searches like "electrician albury" show the map pack above every organic result, and the map pack pulls from Google Business Profiles. No profile means invisibility for the highest-intent searches in your market regardless of how good the website is. Claim it, complete every field, load photos, and start collecting reviews. Our zero-click guide covers squeezing the full value from it.

SECTION 03Cause 3: chasing the wrong keywords

"Web design" pits you against every agency in Australia. "Web design Albury Wodonga" pits you against a dozen locals, and the searcher is closer to buying. Check your page titles right now: a homepage titled "Home | Smith Co" targets nothing. Rewrite titles and headings around service-plus-place terms ("Concrete Driveways Albury Wodonga | Smith Concreting"), and give each service its own page targeting its own term. One page cannot rank for ten services.

SECTION 04Cause 4: thin content

A 150-word service page gives Google almost nothing to rank. The pages winning your local terms answer the customer's actual questions: what the service includes, what it costs here, how long it takes, photos of real jobs, and answers to the objections you hear on the phone. Aim for 600 to 1,200 useful words per service page, then build out from there using the cluster approach in our topical authority guide.

SECTION 05Cause 5: your site is slow

Core Web Vitals are a ranking signal, and slow pages bleed the engagement signals Google reads on top of it. Run pagespeed.web.dev; red or orange field scores mean speed is throttling everything else you do. The 12-fix speed guide walks the whole repair, and images plus hosting recover most sites.

SECTION 06Cause 6: inconsistent citations

Google cross-references your name, address and phone across the web, and mismatches erode its confidence in showing you. One canonical format, corrected everywhere: your site footer, Google, True Local, Yellow Pages, Yelp and the rest. Our 2026 directory list orders the submissions by priority with a tracker, and an afternoon covers the ones that matter.

Links remain votes of confidence, and a site with none struggles to establish trust. Regionally you need few, sourced from real relationships: the chamber of commerce, suppliers who list stockists, local sponsorships, the Border Mail when you have something newsworthy. Skip purchased link packages entirely; Google's spam systems target exactly those, and the penalty costs more than the links ever gave.

SECTION 08Cause 8: it has been six weeks

New domains sit in a low-trust period while Google gathers evidence, and regional terms typically take 60 to 90 days to show first movement even with everything done right. Six weeks of silence on a two-month-old site is the system working normally. Keep publishing, keep collecting reviews, and judge the strategy at the 90-day mark with Search Console data rather than vibes.

SECTION 09The fix order that works

Indexing, profile, keywords, content, speed, citations, links, patience. Each layer depends on the ones before it, which is why buying backlinks for an unindexed site or rewriting content on a page targeting no keyword burns money. Work top-down, confirm each layer with the checks above, and you either fix the ranking yourself or reach us knowing exactly what you need done.
